FINAL Tulip Update: May 24, 1996

Thank you for a wonderful spring season! This is our final tulip update of the year UNLESS:

* Your tulips have not yet bloomed and/or
* Your garden is not included on the list below.

Please review the chart below and, if your garden is not there, report the date your tulips bloomed to: jn-report@learner.org

We won't rest until this list is complete! We'll soon post a final map showing when and where all of these tulip gardens came into bloom. Be sure to visit Journey North's WWW site and see it.

Attention All Tulip Gardeners
Watch for an annoucement soon about Journey North's 1997 Tulip Project. Instructions for planting your "official" Journey North garden will be provided.

Special thanks to the students and staff at Fyle Elementary for sharing the results of their tulip survey! You'll find their survey accompanying this message.

We are in Vassalboro, ME. We have 5 tulips that have blosoms. It has been very warm during the day (in the 60's), but we have had frost at night. We planted them in front of our school. We have black flies already! Our tulips are red and big. Not all tulips have Blossomed. The ones that haven't Blossomed should be coming up pretty soon. But some of ours haven't even come up yet.

We don't worry about frost on our tulips. It has frosted many times since they blossomed and budded and no harm is done. They do last longer, or, if they haven't bloomed, they take longer to open when it is cold. We never cover bulb, and I haven't felt I lost any to freezing (or even snow, should we have it).

From VERMONT:
May 7
On November 7, 1995 at 10:00 am Eastern Time, 19 students from Mr. Crowley's classroom (Montpelier, VT) planted 196 Red Emperor tulip bulbs in two grow boxes on the playground as part of a telecommunications study with Journey North participants around the world.

(Montpelier can be found on a map at Latitude: 44 16 N - Longitude: 72 34 W)

It was 34 degrees F at the time of planting and raining lightly. Two days later we had our first snow fall. The temperature dropped to 17 degrees F. Students solved a portfolio problem and created several planting plans before actually putting the bulbs into the ground. This is the first problem that students solved.

Tulip Portfolio Problem:
Tulips Need Planting For Journey North Project:
1. There are two "grow boxes" on the playground that will be used for planting Red Emperor tulip bulbs.

2. Both boxes are the same size. One of the sides is 36 inches and one of the sides is 110 inches. All the angles are the same.

3. The Red Emperor tulip bulbs need to be planted 6" apart.

4. How many can you fit in the "grow boxes"?

5. Explain your answer in detail.

Students kept records of temperture and precipatation changes for several months. As tulips were reported blooming in other states, Mr. Crowley's students watched spring slowly moving towards Vermont. We created a large map on the wall outside our classroom to display information about the blooming tulips from other schools. We were getting very anxious because our tulips were showing no signs of activity until May 1, 1996. We watched tulips breaking through the ground and by May 7 the first tulip bloomed. Two days later it snowed again but our tulips are growing strong. 100% (WOW!) of them are up and many are now flowering (May 17). Our tallest tulip is 63cm high and 7cm wide.

Students have since dissected tulips to learn flower parts, drawn pictures of tulips at varius stages, wrote tulip stories and used tulip pollen to create art work. Now we are trying to make dye out of the petals of the flower; it doesn't look like it will happen. For Mother's Day students transplanted tulip plants from school to home to share letters and poems about our perrenial love for our mothers.

Check out the grow boxes on the playground at Union School by looking at pictures on our home page and enjoy the beautiful tulips images.

We have 13 tulips that have bloomed. In October we planted 13 tulips. We can't believe they lasted. Last night it was only 25 degrees here. We are excited! They are beautiful! We can see the pistils and stamens in all 13. Our location is 44 degrees 24" 5' north latitude and 72 degrees 18" 46' west longitude. We are first and second graders in Cabot, Vermont.
