Bald Eagle Migration Update, 3/21/95

Bald Eagle Migration Update, March 21, 1995

"Dear Journey North,

"Attached is the latest set of data on #28 and things are looking good! Note the change between March 17th and March 20th. This seems to be the first movement, a northward jump from the river where she has been hanging. This location is just below our Pepacton Reservoir in Delaware County. I'll know more tomorrow after today's satellite pass because her transmitter is on today from noon until 8 p.m.

"Is she really moving? Hopefully she'll be continuing north, way north!! After all, we wouldn't want to spend $4,000 on satellite tracking for an eagle that doesn't migrate! That's one of the challenges we face with this kind of research. You have to hope the technology will work AND catch the right bird. While it would have been nice to find information about an eagle nesting locally, that's not the purpose of our research. So keep your fingers crossed!" Regards,

BALD EAGLE SIGHTINGS REPORTED BY STUDENTS

We haven't had any answers to last week's bald eagle CHALLENGE QUESTION, so here it is again:

Why do you think eagles are being sighted where they are? (Use last week's report along with the reports below to answer this question.)

March 10 From: Boyceville, WISCONSIN On March 10th we held our school-wide election for Name the Eagle. The winner from the students at Tiffany Creek Elementary was Lightning. (The staff was partial to Kojak). During the noon hour we had our first eagle sightings. Two eagles spent about 20 minutes soaring overhead. We couldn't have planned it to cause more excitement. Wow it gave us goose (eagle) bumps. Mrs. Dummer's and Mrs. Plaehn's third graders PLAEHNC@UWSTOUT.EDU

March 16 From: DULUTH, MINNESOTA HI! We're the Marshall Middle School from Duluth M.N. It was 50 degrees all last week and today it's snowing! We were outside on Thursday, March 16, when we saw 1 bald eagle.Another class saw 2 bald eagles on Wednesday, March 15. A classmate saw 3 on Saturday, March 18. From Maggie Becker grade 5.
