Robin Migration Update, 3/29/95

Robin Migration Update, March 29, 1995

As you'll discover when you read the reports below, robins have swept through the northern section of the United States. Now we need to contact more spotters in Canada! Do you know that robins range all the way into parts of northern Canada and Alaska? They won't arrive in many places until the middle of May, so we still have time to get the word out. Will you help? If you're good at surfing the Internet, please spread the word to your friends in northern North America. Then report back and tell us how you did it.

Remember to report the FIRST robin you see this spring to: jn_robin@informns.k12.mn.us

March 12 Hello! We have spotted our first robins! We are a second grade class in Park Forest Elementary School in State College, Pennsylvania. We are located in central Pennsylvania. Our latitude is 40.9 N, and the longitude is 77.8 W. We began seeing robins on Sunday, March 12, 1995. Ali was our first robin spotter. She saw a robin in her front yard, eating a worm at 2:23 p.m. The weather was partly sunny and partly cloudy. The high temperature that day was 62 degrees Fahrenheit, the low was 30, and the average was 46. The normal temperature for that day is 45 for the high, 26 for the low, and 35 for the average. Most of the temperatures from March 6th through March 12th were higher than normal. The temperature on March 12th was the highest we had during these days as well.

About half of our class has seen robins. We will continue to look for more robins as they migrate north. We hope you find robins in your area soon to welcome spring!

March 20 Hello - here in Waldo County we have had several sightings in the last day - 3 sightings in Belfast, Maine and one in Stockton Springs, all located in mid-coast Maine. Our first day of spring sightings have a latitude of 44o25' and longitude of 69o0'.

Also interestingly, last week the cedar waxwings passed through Belfast on their tour north. We live on the bay and they sit in our maple trees for a short rest. Our last bird observation is that two loons spent the entire winter in Belfast Harbor. The harbor did not freeze over this winter due to unusually mild conditions. Our harbor is fed by the Passagassawaukeag River.... any idea what that means? If you are interested, email to the 4-H program here in Waldo County: janehc@umce.umext.maine.edu

March 23 I saw my first robin today at approximately 4:30 PM in Lisbon Falls, Maine Hooray--spring is coming! Jill Spencer JSpenMTA@aol.com

March 23 We had a report from a parent who teaches at the U of Washington who told us today that the robins have invaded the campus. She said they just showed up by the hundreds and are having a worm feast. In a conflicting report, our librarian says she sees them all winter. Could our weather be mild enough to have them year-round? By the way, there is a strong south wind today and the temperature is about 55 degrees.
