Introducing Mystery Class #3

Pigeon, Michigan
43.833 N, 83.282 W

Hi Students and Mystery Classes!
We are the 6th graders of
Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker Junior High School.

We are students of Mrs. Ehrlich's social studies class that participated as a secret Journey North Mystery Class.

Now that the contest is over and we have ALL taken our guesses, we would like to tell you a little more about our school and community here in Pigeon, Michigan.

Our School

Students come from about a twenty mile radius to attend Laker Schools. Our school district has grades Kindergarten through twelfth and is made up of three towns that consolidated to form one school district. We have seven hours or periods in the Junior High and High School each hour is about 50 minutes long. Our day starts at 7:55 in the morning and ends at 2:50 in the afternoon.

For a small school we offer a variety of programs. In our Junior High we have Hands on Science class, art, band, multimedia class, and of course the basic core classes. Our main language is English, but foreign languages are offered at our school. Our Junior High students are offered French. In our high school we have three foreign languages, one of them is Chinese. Our Junior High students participate in many different sports. Basketball, football, soccer, baseball, softball, and volleyball are just a few that we compete in. These activities all take place after school.

Our sixth grade class has about 55 students in the class. Some of our favorite activities are basketball, volleyball, and football. Another activity that we like to do is attend our Fun Nights. Fun Nights are action packed with games, snacks, and dances. We are also looking forward to our field trip to Camp Leelanau located in Northern Michigan in the spring.

Our school and area is home to the biggest wind turbine farm in Michigan. The pictures below show the wind turbines for our elementary school and the ones between Elkton and Pigeon, Michigan.

This is our elementary school, which has three smaller wind turbines that provide power to the elementary school. We are the only school in the state of Michigan to have wind turbines to power one of our school buildings. Between the towns of Pigeon and Elkton there are 32 wind turbines. They are close to 400 feet tall and are supposed to provide power to about 15,000 homes.

Our Town

Our town of Pigeon is a small town with an approximate population of 1200 people. It is located in the "thumb" of Michigan. Pigeon was named after all of the pigeons that were in the area at one time. We feel lucky to be able to live in this area because there are so many fun activities to do all year round.

During the summer, Pigeon has a festival called the Farmer's Fest. Some of the activities are: a big parade, mud volleyball, lip syncing, carnival games, a petting zoo, and much more. In the winter you can go sledding down the big hill behind our hospital. Many other towns close to Pigeon also have festivals in the summer. Caseville to the north has Cheeseburger Days during August. This attracts people from all over the state of Michigan. Other festivals that take place during the summer are Sugar Festival, Bay Port Fish Sandwich Festival, and Elkton Autumn fest.

The two main employers in Pigeon are Scheurer Hospital and Huron Castings. The factory produces supplies for the auto industry.

The map below shows you where our town of Pigeon
is located in Michigan. Look right in the center of the map,
about 1/4 of the way down from the top.

The other picture is an aerial view of Pigeon with all the wind turbines in the background.

Our area's main economy is agriculture. We have lots of dairy farms and fields that surround many of our homes. We grow sugar beets, beans, wheat, corn and other crops. We also have apple orchards.

Here is an apple crisp recipe you might want to try.

Apple Crisp

Ingredients:

4 cups of sliced apples
2/3 cup of brown sugar
½ cup of flour
½ cup of Quaker Oats
¾ teaspoon of cinnamon
¾ teaspoon of nutmeg
1/3 cup of softened butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease square pan, 8x8x2 inches.
Place apple slices in pan. Mix remaining ingredients thoroughly and sprinkle over apples. Bake for 30 minutes or until apples are tender and topping is golden brown.
Serve warm with ice cream.

Our State

Our state is Michigan and it is the 8th largest state in the United States. Michigan’s nickname is "The Great Lakes State." Michigan is bordered by four of the five Great Lakes. Lake Huron borders Michigan's thumb where our town is located. Michigan is divided into two peninsulas. Connecting the two peninsulas is the Mackinac Bridge. It is five miles long. Our capital is Lansing and our largest city is Detroit. We have many places in our state that tourists come and visit.

Mackinac Island is located in Lake Huron and is a state park. You can find the best homemade fudge on this island. They do not let cars on the island, so the only transportation on the island is bicycle or horse. The only way to get to the island is by ferry or by small plane.

Here is a picture of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. It claims to have the world’s longest outdoor porch.

Another tourist spot is the Soo Locks located
in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan.

Many boats from all over the world travel through the locks to their destinations.

Most of these freighters are carrying grain or ore. It takes about 30 minutes for a boat to go through the locks.

In Michigan we have all four seasons. Spring is usually rainy and damp. It can be very muddy due to the melting snow. Summer can get quite hot. Most people enjoy going to the beach or going camping during this season. Autumn is when the weather starts to cool down. This is when the crops are harvested and hunting becomes a major past time. The leaves also change color during autumn. Winter is usually very cold. Temperatures can get below 0 degrees. Snowmobiling and ice fishing are popular activities during winter.

Our Country
The United States is the fourth largest country in the world. We are made up of 50 states. Our capital is Washington D.C. Our official language is English. However, we have many different ethnic groups that live in our country. We are considered a melting pot because of all the different ethnic groups that live here. We elect a president every four years to be our leader. This year is an election year for us. We could make history this year by either electing a woman as president for the first time or an African – American for the first time. It will be an exciting year.

Here is a picture of Mount Rushmore; it has four presidents carved into the rock.

The presidents are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and
Abraham Lincoln.
