Update Across Lake Erie Journey North

Darlene Burgess watched as monarchs began their 35-mile overwater crossing from Point Pelee on August 26th.

"It was a beautiful sunny morning with light northerly winds. At the Tip at 7:40 am — for an hour — I observed 20-24 monarchs every minute or two come from the north, individually, on the calm east side of the Point and, without hesitation (except for 1), flitted south out over Lake Erie and out of view. Most left the Tip around 50 feet high above the lake and gained altitude to 100 and even 200 feet as they journeyed south."
