Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/04/2001

Number: 1

Since the first major migrations was so early this year we were unsure that we would be able to collect Monarchs from our school ground area, but we did and in great quantities. On 9-4-01 the students of Vandyke Elementary and I collected 8 caterpillars and 4 more on 9-5-01. All but two are in chrysalis as of 9-10-01. We expect to hang the chrysalis in ouur tomato cages (thanks to Ms. Prysby's idea) and wait out the butterflies, expected around 9-19-01. Release soon after. The area has seen great numbers of Monarchs this year. Hope this is an indication of higher mortality. Will keep you updated. News story to be in our local newspaper on our study, collection, etc. next week.
