Signs of Fall

Date: 09/09/2001

At dusk last evening, a platoon of 25+ heavy bodied, large dragonflies swept the air above the goldenrod feeding on mites or gnats. At 8:20 am today, saw a scout hummingbird dart into the garden crabapple. Her quick forays into cleomes, balony petunias, & hummingbird sage were joined by 8 to 10 diving, battling female companions. This hurly burly flock of acrobats won & lost battles over fushia were rather quietly for hummers. Heard some "zipping" & "sizzling" with minimal "squeaking". Feeding heavily at the feeders & flowers was alternated with resting as their refueling settled. Violent thunderstorms, heavy with rain & wind, moved in at 3 pm lingering into the evening hours. Saw 1 hummer resting in a fushia plant under the balcony out of the rain. It's been quiet around here all week, so I'm reasonably sure these are migrating birds. Haven't seen them filling up for the night so they may have moved on between storms.
