Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/12/2001

Number: 1

Over the summer, monarchs have been sighted daily in our area. On bicycle rides, I have seen at least one every couple of miles or so. I have seen about 3 a day killed at the side of the road. Apparently, due to contact with vehicles. The milkweed has grown tall and this fall we were able to find some monarch caterpillars. Today, we have the beginning of 12 hatching. We intend to release them when they are ready for the flight south. It had been exciting watching and participating in Journey South - with real butterflies and the symbolic ones (we intend to do again this year)
Weather here is cool at night but still warm in the day. We expect the monarch's to begin migration soon, but have not seen the numbers decrease yet.
