Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/14/2001

Number: 1

The almost world-famous grade 3 class at Our Lady of Mercy released their first monarch (a male) on Friday, September 14 at 11:00. We tagged him (A1Q150). We still have several chrysalids hanging in the classroom and we are still finding caterpillars- today Amber found a second-instar which is now munching away on our milkweed.
Two of our larvae escaped and disappeared for a couple of days in the classroom...and then we found them. One was a chrysalid under Mrs. Conroy's desk. The other one had crawled all the way up onto the bulletin board and was hanging in a "J" from the paper monarch which was pinned on the board as part of our monarch display, just beside the Journey North poster- maybe it was looking at the map! We have taken pictures of our unusually talented monarch larva (which has now become a chrysalid!
