Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/13/2001

Number: 1

A look at the late afternoon sky showed a wonderful picture--and suggested there are still a lot of migrating monarchs to be viewed in central Iowa. The monarchs were moving again in heavy numbers--this time to the west, flying at heights of 25 feet to more than 1,000 feet and riding a wind from the east. Between 5:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., 223 monarchs were counted with the naked eye and binoculars. Many could easily be seen against an ever-changing cloudy sky, and their shadows against the clouds were beautiful as they raced and/or floated toward the west.
