Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/15/2001

Number: 1

Hundreds of gorgeous orange and black butterflies went into the air when we were talking near our large mulberry tree on Saturday, 9/15/01, about 9:00 AM. They settled back into the tree and looked like dry leaves. They flew out several times on Saturday and Sunday as friends and relatives came by to see the spectacular view. They circled a short distance and settled back into the same tree. We had a cool rain on Saturday evening and they were still here on Sunday at dark and it is beginning to rain again.
There
were a few, maybe 100 left this morning (9/19)and they seem to be all gone this
evening. We had light to medium
drizzling rain all day Tuesday (9/18), so I guess this sunny day today was right to
continue on their southern journey. Each time they fluttered out of the
trees they would fly up south westward and then settle back down in the
mulberry or oak trees.
It was sad to see them
gone after a Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and part of Wednesday visit.
How beautiful and fun it has been.
