Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/18/2001

Number: 1

Today I checked on the caterpillars. Yesterday there were 15; today I count only 9. I found the body of the one that got 'stung' by a 'bee' earlier this morning and the ants were already taking care of it-I really thought it was going to make it. I found another body in the half-eaten (by deer) turk's cap. That makes 3 caterpillars in all that haven't made it (the one from yesterday got 'eaten' by a small black-with-white-spots garden spider.) I now am beginning to understand why there were so many.

There seems to be plenty of A. tubersoa left for the other 9 caterpillars. They are getting big too--about 2"long and fat.
