Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/12/2001

Number: 1

Yesterday afternoon (9-12) students at Morton School found monarchs in
large numbers roosting in trees around town. Hastings is 40.35 N 98.23 W
The temps yesterday were in the upper 80's with a 10mph breeze from the
north. This may be the first wave for us. Numbers are not unusually high
but we seem to have an enlarged area of roosting sites. Normally in
previous years there were a few parks and shelter belts which were always
filled. Yesterday monarchs were more clustered into the center of town
roosting in backyard trees.
