Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/14/2001

Number: 1

Upwards of 3000 monarchs clustered in 5 trees.

The butterflies started coming in around 5pm Friday Sept 14, 2001 when a quite strong cold front was coming through but weather was very clear. The next morning, as we watched them it was very cold (40's maybe) and they didn't start moving till at least 8:30am, when the sun was just starting to hit the trees. They then started moving only very sporadically. We didn't stay past 9am so didn't catch the main exodus, but none came back Saturday night..........

The coordinates for the monarch-occupied Tulip Poplar trees (about 5 trees) at the Michael McGowan homestead on Turner Mountain are 38.06N, -78.62W. Turner Mountain is on the Charlottesville West section of the USGS maps.
