Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/20/2001

Number: 1

For two hours we traveled in a NW direction from Bolivar in the MO Ozarks to Kansas City (10:30AM - 12:30PM). The temp. went from 78 to 82 degrees. The sunny breeze was from the northeast. We started seeing Monarch butterflies drift from right to left (NE to SW) in front of our van and from 6 to about 15 feet high. In total we counted over 231 Monarchs. We also saw many Sulfer (yellow) butterflies. We've made this trip many times but this event certainly made it more enjoyable! I would call it "Peak Migration" for Southwest/Central Missouri.
