Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/24/2001

Number: 1

Fall arrived in Oklahoma City, OK this a.m (9/24/02).

We have had a steady stream of new arrivals here in the butterfly garden at
the Oklahoma City Zoo (Oklahoma City, OK) since 9/24/01. Below are the
numbers we have tagged since that date. We are recapturing many individuals
that were tagged early in the month here at the zoo. One individual
collected today was tagged here on 9/8/01. We are also still seeing mating,
egg laying and found 6 larva on 9/24/01.

Temp is in the low
50's, sky cloudy and a strong north wind. I just finished scouting regular
roosting spots near the Oklahoma City Zoo's butterfly garden this a.m. We
are seeing an influx of monarchs as compared to last week. I found 4 small
clusters of about 20, plus several loaners roosting in large hackberry and
elms roughly 20 yards to the north of the garden. Upon returning to the
office I scanned the sky and observed 7 high flyers screaming past on the
strong north winds.
