Moose are rutting. Many bulls and a few cows with calves have been sighted regularly over the past week. Large numbers of migrating passerines have been observed: western meadowlarks, thousands of migrating warblers, and white-throated sparrows. Flocks of sandhill cranes are numerous, as are migrating waterfowl, especially sub-species of Canada geese.
the northland's winds are switching. Temperatures in the 70s were commonplace last week, but today the breeze has a bite to it. Last weekend (23rd & 24th) it froze across low-lying regions. Ice and frost formed on the windshields of vehicles, shallow puddles from the rain event the night before, and on grasses in the fields. A low temp of 19 degrees was reported at one such site. The trees leaves are changing fast, and the cottonwoods are already letting'm go. It's a wonderful time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.
