Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/30/2001

Number: 1

For the past two weeks, Monarch's have been arriving daily to our 5 acres. The last 3 seasons, the first ones didn't appear until October. Today, Sept 30 - There were 18 on a 10'x 8' section of Lantana montevidensis. All appear to be in good condition, bright colors, with no apparent torn wings. Other nectar sources that they are gathering on are Lantana radiation, Salvia leucantha, and Salvia uliginosa. At around 1:00p.m. I observed a pair coupled, and resting on a Grevillea. This evening, just after sunset, they were still there and coupled.
It is hard to get a total count, but at least 75 to 100 were flying around today.
