Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/11/2001

Number: 1

We released our first Monarch on August 11, and our last on September 20. We
released a total of 42 butterflies, 18 males and 24 females. Western New
York was in a major drought this summer, and this may have affected the
number of butterflies or the time they laid eggs. When we finally started
looking for eggs in earnest, there was evidence that there had been
caterpillars hatched previously, but, as usual, it is unclear what happened
to them. This is the first year that we have had butterflies to release
after Labor Day, and the first year we have had caterpillars in September.
This caused some concern since due to the lack of rain, most of our milkweed
plants were dead or dying at the end of August.(Writing October 1, 2001.)
