Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2001

Number: 1

On the south shore of Lake Ponthcartrain monarchs are collecting on wildflowers as they complete their crossing of the lake. One lone goldenrod plant had a dozen monarchs on it. At least one thousand "shiny new" monarchs are feeding in a strip of wildflowers roughly three blocks long and thirty feet wide. Every monarch seen by me today, through binoculars, was virtually perfect and new looking. This same patch of wildflowers is feeding thousands of buckeye butterflies along with the monarchs.
