Signs of Fall

Date: 09/26/2001

Number: 1

We
have been watching Broad-winged Hawks stream over school
from the northeast to southwest every morning on this tailwind
before the thermals would develop to support the huge kettles
of hawks.

We have had north to northeast winds for the past five days,
east today ... low of 60 and a high of 85. There have been
some very strong winds reported by the radar watchers from
1000 to 2000 feet, near 35 mph out of the north-northeast
while just a light north to northeast breeze at the surface.

The Hazel Bazemore Hawk Watch, about seventy
miles southwest of Victoria reported an official count of 443,230
Broad-windged Hawks on Wednesday and near 300,000 on
Tuesday. Any monarch willing to get up to 2000 feet would
have caught a very good tailwind across the state. The hawk
watchers at the site on Smith Point, about one hundred thirty
miles east-northeast of Port Lavaca, should see the monarchs
migrating along the coastal route a day or two before we do.
