Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/02/2001

Number: 1

We have seen numerous monarchs the past two weeks in our butterfly garden at Norton Elementary in Snellville, GA. Three years ago all we found was old wings. We planted an abundance of milkweed this spring and it has made all of the difference. I think the monarchs we are seeing are the last generation because they have fresh wings and very bright colors. The children chase them feverishly on the playground as they zoom south west towards Alabama. I brought several larva into the classroom for observation. One emerged this morning and we are observing her (it is a female) and then will tag her and release her tomorrow. We have named her "Miss Liberty." The students love the name and so do I!
