Signs of Fall

Date: 10/04/2001

Number: 1

The seals have gone from the bay where I observe them during the spring and summer. The ledge I observe is used for pupping during May-late June, then, I suspect, for molting. By the middle of August the numbers of seals on the ledge will go from an average of 50 (anywhere from 25-100) to the occassional 1 or 2 in September and October.

The eagle pair that have a nest on an island nearby are still here (they stay year around). They have had chicks every year for the last 12 (that is how long I have been observing), but this summer they did not succeed. I am glad to see they are still here and home they try again and have chicks next year.

It has been an extremely dry summer here, rather than turning brilliant fall colors, most trees have subdued browns and golds and are losing their leaves early it seems.
