Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/06/2001

Number: 1

Yesterday at approximately 3:30pm monarchs began to filter in to our country area, and by dusk, we had approximately 3 to 4 thousand that had began to hang in one of our large mesquites and fruitless mulberries! We were able to tag about 200 last night, and a 100 more this morning! Could have tagged many more but never expected so many, and ran out of tags! Big mistake, but a wonderful, and beautiful experience this year, compared to years before! Have noticed that all of these monarchs are huge, again compared to years before! Also they are making good use of the tropical milkweed that we have planted, using it as both a nectar source, and a host plant, yes even this late in the season ,still laying eggs! Also feeding on several other nectar sources we had planted on their behalf! Seems to be a "great year"!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are located approximately 5 miles n.e .of Abilene, TX in Hamby, Texas.
