Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/02/2001

Number: 1

First witnessed hundreds of Monarchs on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I assume that this is the same migration mentioned by the observers in Chincoteague, VA on the Eastern Shore. I did not perform an exact count per hour; however, I feel comfortable stating that the rate had to be at least several hundred per hour. There had been a strong storm with heavy northeast winds for the previous two days but this day there was clear skies and temperatures in the 70's.

The Monarchs were feeding on sorrel bush. Some people may call this cottonwood bush.
