Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/10/2001

Number: 1

One of the grade six students found a male monarch this morning flying between the portables at Our Lady of Mercy School in Bancroft Ontario. The monarch looked very fresh and healthy, but it was cool and rainy this morning so it did not fly very well. The student brought the monarch in to the grade 3's who have become the school's "bugologists" with their projects about monarch butterflies. We nursed the monarch throughout the morning and then released him from our window at noon. He immediately flew south!
We are very surprised to find a new monarch so far in the north at this time because we had snow and sleet and hail here last weekend.
We hope our little friend makes his way to Mexico before the leaves have all fallen from the trees.
