Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/08/2001

Number: 1

This is our first year of observing monarchs so we were unsure of the peak as it went through. We took notes and tagged for Monarch Watch. Sept 5 and Sept 8 were days of the highest concentrations of monarchs. After the weekend of the 8th we saw very few around. Both the 5th and the 8th the weather was warm with light winds. The butterflies were located in a wooded lot and in a restored prairie. They clustered in twos and threes. They were mainly on thistle in the prairie and in the pines in the wooded lot. We did not observe roosting areas.
