Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/15/2001

Number: 1

We don't see a great wave of monarchs here. We monitored the monarchs for about three
and a half weeks. We never saw any more than 4 in one day during a 20
minute period. We saw 4 on several days.

But on Sept. 15, which was a
Saturday, a cold front came through. I was outside for much of the day and
saw many, many monarchs, (probably 10 in a 20 minute period, but at a
different time of day and different location) but I wasn't at school and I
wasn't able to get to school at the same time we usually watched for
monarchs. So, I couldn't say we saw x amount during the same time at the
same place.
The following Monday, I asked students if they had noticed more
monarchs than usual. Many reported seeing lots of monarchs too, and a
couple of students said they saw clumps of them. The numbers really seemed
to dwindle after that weekend.
We don't get monarchs going through this area in great numbers, but
it was neat to try and find the peak day.
We had hoped to get data in number form by watching every day at the
same time in the school grounds.
