Just before sunset 10/16/01 monarchs flew to a juniper in our yard about 9 miles s/sw of Kerrville, TX, near Hwy 16S. As they prepared for an overnight stay, we watched in awe. The morning of 10/17/01, we went out before full daylight so we wouldn't miss the flight south. During their three-hour process of awakening, warming, exercising wings, and one-by-one flight, we stood enthralled as 75-100 Monarchs resumed their flight to Mexico. One had a damaged wing which looked as if something had bitten the tip of it off but it could, and did, fly. A great experience!
