Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/21/2001

Number: 1

I was playing with my kids in the University grounds a few minutes ago
(Sunday 21 october), which sits on a small hill, (the famous historical
site, Cerro de las Campanas) and my girl Jennifer said, "Hey, Daddy the
monarchs have returned." Sure enough, there they were, not a lot and they
held close to the vegetation, and not like I have seen in heavy flight
activity when there are hundreds in the sky. Its a clear, almost windless
day, the same as yesterday after the cold front that came through eary last
week. I assume this is the first wave here, and in the next week there will
be more. Looking out from my office here looking out over the Cerro, we did
not see any. (The Cerro de
Campanas hillside, in the middle of Querétaro City, is the historic site where
the ill fated emperor of Mexico, Maximiliano was executed and citizen rule
was "restored" to Mexico.

If I have time, I'd like to see just where they pass in their flight in the
next week. I suspect that they keep to the higher altitudes and vegetation
and do not fly through the desert areas. If I have time I'll check various
spots and try to take some kind of measurement (per minute in field of
view?). I have a class of 15 students in my Invertebrate Class and maybe we
can run a field class to do some counts.
The locality here is N 20 degrees 35.372, 100 degrees 24.653'.
