Signs of Fall

Date: 10/24/2001

Number: 1

Yesterday I conducted an interpretive hike through the Sanctuary for a group of elementary students from Warren. I joked with the group's leader that, hopefully, we won't need to do the snowshoe program for awhile yet. Well, today we could do the snowshoe program without a problem. The Red River Valley is in the midst of this season's first snow, in addition to its first blizzard. The trees are breaking and bending from the weight of several inches of heavy wet snow. It's beautiful to be sure. And more is coming down at this writing. So far, close to a foot of snow has fallen. The wind is howling and near white-out conditions exist in the open country. The birds are busy trying to find food and shelter. Robins are looking for fruit and the juncos are flocking around the feeders. It's winter!
