Signs of Fall

Date: 11/04/2001

Number: 1

Last Sunday, November 4 Mrs. Grimm and her daughter experienced a terrific nature event. Each
fall and spring the grackles (a local black bird) "swarm" to prepare for the migration south. There
must have been a million birds in our yard and in the neighboring corn field. They were so very loud
- and then all of a sudden, they all stopped calling and took to flight all at once. It was an audible,
"Whoosh". There were so many of them that they blocked out the sun for 10 to 30 seconds. It was
awesome! We have not seen a grackle since Sunday.
