Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 01/27/2002

Number: 1

Hello Journey North- I have to report the earlies run of sap in my maple bush since I began tapping eight years ago. I put in five taps on Saturday January 26 at lunch time. On Sunday, I collected one sap pail full of sap...I was astonished! There is almost no snow in the bush around the trees and the frost is not very deep in the ground. I cannot remember a milder winter. I am using the sap as medicine, or a spring tonic- in my tradition, we gather the first sap and drink a cup of sap every day for a month. It tastes very good! On Sunday the sap ran again and I collected another pail full (about a gallon and a half). Since then, the temperature has dropped and the sky is gray and the weather predicition is for more snow and freezing rain, so the sap has not been flowing. I will monitor my five taps and watch for another run. In the past I have usually put my taps in just before the full moon because the sap runs better at that time, and I noted that the full moon was shining
