Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 01/12/2002

Number: 1

As a boy, growing up in suburbia Illinois, I thought that robins were country birds which always flew South for the winter. I was amazed to find robins high in the mountains of the Cache National Forest in Northern Utah. I was even more suprised to see so many of them overwinter up here at 4800' elevation. As long as there is fruit in the orchards, and feeders nearby, the robins have braved extremes of 30 below zero (unusual for this area) and 24' of snow in less than one day. We are still awaiting the first large wave of returning Spring migrants.
