Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/05/2002

Number: 1

There again is an overwintering population of monarchs along the Texas mid coast. Until the freeze on January 3, on sunny, warm days there would be twenty to thirty monarchs that were visiting the wildflowers along the shore of Lavaca Bay ... the short goldenrod was the number one choice. During January we observed mating pairs a few time in the back yard and almost every sunny, warm day we could find new eggs deposited by one to three females on back yard milkweed. On the third of February, we still found all instars of monarch larvae happily munching away on the new growth on backyard A. curassavica. This seems to be true up and down the coast, especially in backyards near the bays that have stands of curassavica.
