Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/06/2002

Number: 1

Approximately 3500 Monarchs are overwintering in two eucalyptus trees at the edge of the grove behind our house. We have observed up to 50,000 Monarch at a time in those and adjacent trees since we bought the house in 1994.

Daytime temperatures usually range from 50 to 70 degrees during their stay, late September to late February, with an occasional dip into the 40s in December. It rarely freezes in the grove. They normally know when rain storms are approaching and move back into the grove. We lost very few to wind and rain this year. Its been in the 60s for the past few days and they are very active, lots of mating.
