Tulips EMERGED

Date: 02/06/2002

Number: 1

Surprise! Our 3rd graders inspected the garden on 2/6 and found 6 bulbs had emerged! This is way ahead of our prediciton for an April emergence! Students were excited, but concerned. Our bulbs emerged last year on April 4th. The students wanted to know why this was happening. Our winter has been unusually warm, but we examined our accumulated weather data (taken on Wednesdays since planting day 11/07/01) for some clues. During school hours, our soil temperature has dropped below 32 degrees only once! Our highest soil temp. since Jan.1 was 55 degrees. Our weekly air temp. low has only reached 33 once. Our air temp. hi since 1/1 was 74. We discussed how our soil and air temps. are normally much colder. Many 'What if it snows or freezes' scenarios were discussed. Ideas were recorded in their science journals.
