Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/12/2002

Number: 1

Several individuals seen flying about in the Santa Monica Mountains (outside Los Angeles) within 10 km of the ocean but away from known overwintering sites. This is typical on warmer days in southern California. Some mating was observed at the Ellwood overwintering site in Goleta (near Santa Barbara) a week ago. It is unclear if spring re-migration has started.
