I couldn't believe my eyes. A monarch was sipping nectar from the flowers that weren't suppose to be blooming. I am absolutely sure because I got a great close-up view. I was playing golf at a club right on the Cape fear River. It was about 4:30 The animal flew by landed on a flower. Like you my first thought was a viceroy. I got very close and I knew that it was a monarch by its size. I have seen some as late as January on the beach in the years past. Milk weed does grow here if planted but it is hard to find in the wild. I will continue to look for monarchs along the ocean.
