Just as a year ago, there is a population of overwintering monarchs in the coastal town of Port O'Connor, mid coast of Texas. Today's photos at http://2k2.homestead.com/17feb02.html There is protection among the mottes of coastal oaks during the winter and wildflowers, especially lantana, as nectar sources. A mating pair last Saturday in Port Lavaca, about 20 miles west of POC, also in Calhoun County: http://2k2.homestead.com/9feb02.html Three years ago, before we knew much about the overwintering population in the area, we would have known "for sure" these were early returnees from Mexico that no one had mentioned.
