Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 02/27/2002

Number: 1

Expecting record cold in the morning ... possibly as low as 27 dF
to the bay, 23 in Victoria. Last time it was this cold this late was
in 1989. Covered what we could (Sue), took in what we could,
will see how tough the rest is. The freeze area could extend just
south of Laredo, but probably not as far as south as Monterrey
(Mexico) ... 42 there now, 40 here. Had new eggs on the
curassavica behind the shop this time yesterday, saw one male
monarch and one female, plus several large larva. Thousands of
acres of corn that is just up will need to be replanted. Any A.
asperula, linearis, viridis, and oenotheroides that was breaking
the ground would be set back, not sure how cold tolerant any
of these is or long it would take the tubers to rebound, a good
rain would help.
