Bald Eagle

Date: 03/09/2002

Number: 1

This sunny morning a I heard the familiar sound of the sandhill cranes as they passed over SW Gainesville. When I looked upward to see them they were passing beneath a large group (20+) of eagles who were enjoying the thermals. Approximately 1/3 were immatures. The white heads of the adults were clearly visible when the sun hit them. It was an impressive sight, and one I had never seen before. Eagles are year-round residents here, but seeing a large group together was a first for me. Were these birds migrants on their way northward?
