Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 01/06/2002

Number: 1

30 students from Oley Valley E.S. visited a nearby farm to observe sugar maples being tapped for sap. The weather was perfect! The night had been in the 20"s and the daytime temperatures rose to 55?. As soon as Mr. Burger drilled the hole the sap began to flow. Many students let the sap drip into their mouths after he hammered in the spout. Back at his home we tasted some syrup that had already been processed. We also tasted chocolate chip cookies made with maple sugar. What a great day!
