Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/14/2002

Number: 1

The middle of March and still no wild milkweed in the area!
San Antonio just reported "abnormally dry" conditions and to
their south "moderate drought". Eight weeks with only two light
showers (<.35) here is not helping the milkweed situation! Has
anyone in south Texas been out in the wild and seen any of the
native milkweeds sprouting? Does anyone know the condition
of milkweeds in northeastern Mexico ... around Monterrey?
Will these early northbound monarchs fly until they die if they
find no milkweed or can they stay in diapause for a time yet?
Haven't heard, but perennis might be up in the coastal, swampy
areas. Are there other milkweeds (other than asperula and viridis)
that might be up that they will use? We will head inland on Saturday
to see if any of the pasture asperula is up. 84 dF, cloudy, strong
south wind.
