Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/15/2002

Number: 1

March 15th and we have found no native, wild milkweed (A. viridis) in the usual places we find it in late February. It is very dry along the Texas mid coast ... two light showers in the last eight weeks ... actually very dry at all locations west and north of us. We have been checking every day at the five locations we observe along 87 and can find no viridis breaking thru the hard crust. Backyard A. asperula is about to break thru, but it has been sprinkled. Backyard A. curassavica has new shoots at ground level coming back after the hard freeze but it also has had two waterings. We will head northwest tomorrow towards San Antonio looking for A. viridis and A. asperula. There may be some sandy areas where asperula or viridiflora might be up. It is possible that some of the milkweeds along the coast such as perennis, and linearis have sprouted. Right now we have no confirmation of native, wild milkweeds up in central Texas ... bleak! http://asclepias.homestead.com/
