All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 03/09/2002

Number: 1

We are still in the throes of winter. Our days are getting longer, which
gives us all spring fever. We have gotten a few lovely days, but no real
signs of spring yet. I am watching the JNorth reports and keeping up my
maps, but so far, no tulips, or robins or hummers. One of our big signs of
spring is the hooligan run. Hooligan are a fish who come to spawn in April
or May. They are followed by hordes of seals, sea lions, eagles, gulls and
bears. It makes quite a show! But not quite yet. I haven't seen any
overwintering robins this year. We usually do not have them, but four years
ago we had a couple. Our winter residents are ravens, crows, bald eagles,
hoary redpolls, chickadees, magpies, and some ducks (scoters, mergansers
and goldeneyes). We are waiting and watching.
