Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 03/17/2002

Number: 1

The first Ruby-throated Humming bird that we could ID stopped by the backdoor at eight to nectar, young male. RT's have been reported all week in South Texas and along the coastal plains, but this is the first we could ID at home. Very little for him to find to nectar on as the big freeze on March 4th. His choices would have included lantana (still none), salvia (about ten are returning from the roots), and red pentas (seven are returning from the roots). There is some Coral honeysuckle and Mexican honeysuckle that did make it thru the freeze.
