Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/15/2002

Number: 1

Perhaps an early migrant? This individual was pretty worn. Don't know if one would actually be able to overwinter here or not.

I got point blank looks at it for a few minutes as it piddled
around in a short grassy lawn. It was fairly worn, but still flew well.
My feeling is that it managed to overwinter in the area rather than
having migrated up from Mexico, but who knows for sure.

Ft. Fisher is in New Hanover County, ca. 15-20 miles SE
of Wilmington, NC. Ft. Fisher is actually closer to Southport, NC in Brunswick Co., if you would rather use a closer town.

(And since you don't know who I am, I'm a biologist at Duke University and
have been an active butterflier in NC for 7 years. I established and
maintain the listserve "CarolinaLeps" email discussion group for
butterflies and moths in the Carolinas, and I founded and continue to
compile the NABA Durham 4th of July Butterfly Count.)
