Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/14/2002

Number: 1

I was birding in Kerrville, Texas this past Thursday 3/14 and
noticed numerous butterflies nectaring on henpen, about the only thing
blooming, on the heavily mowed slopes near the Guadalupe in what is known as
Flatrock Lake. There were numerous species, most particularly pipevine
swallowtails and hawk moths, but also a large new looking two tailed tiger
swallowtail and a rather fresh looking adult male Monarch! The latter was a
real surprise to me as we don't see many during the spring and especially
not this early.
