Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/21/2002

Number: 1

Eight Adult Monarchs sighted - Four migrating north; two nectaring (apple blossums); and two searching for milkweed (egg laying).

Since my report of 3/21 as of 3/26 I have observed a daily flow of Monarchs across the
Rio Hondo Ranch Subdivision - sometimes at a rate of 3-5 an hour. In my 5
years here, I have never seen so many Spring Monarchs.

Today I observed a Monarch that appeared to be laying eggs. Upon
investigation, I found a 4-inch long Antelopes Horns milkweed (Asclepias
asperula) seedling with three eggs on its leaves. I searched the area and
found about a dozen Green Milkweed (A. viridiflora) seedlings. None had
eggs on them.
